1. Welcome to my journey through American Evangelical Christianity
American Evangelical Christianity is nothing if not diverse in its expressions. While so much of it can be boiled down to a few simple tenets (and the enemies it has made throughout its history), there are so many different cults within the larger framework of Evangelicalism. My entrance into the Evangelical world began even before… Continue reading

9. Afraid of being left behind
It’s a fear that every Evangelical kid grows up with. It’s probably one of the main reasons we prayed the sinner’s prayer over and over again, hoping that at least one of those prayers would “stick.” For some, teachings about a postmortem realm of unending pain and suffering weren’t quite enough to scare them into… Continue reading

8. My relationship with music (part 4)
Read part 3 here. There was something different in the atmosphere at Hillsong NYC. It was enticing. The music was engaging, the songs simultaneously new and deeply familiar. Hype and excitement were high, and it felt like constant growth. A campus opened in Montclair, NJ. The Manhattan campus outgrew Irving Plaza and moved to the… Continue reading

7. My relationship with music (part 3)
Read part 2 here After I graduated from BJU, I went back to my home church in Parsippany for several months before life there became almost unbearable. My high school best friend had been attending a new startup church in Morristown called Liquid Church, the first church in New Jersey to cultivate a “rock-concert” atmosphere… Continue reading

5. My relationship with music (part 1)
“One good thing about music—when it hits you, you feel no pain.” Bob Marley While I love this quote from the King of Reggae, it doesn’t ring quite so true. Quite the opposite for me, in fact. Music is filled with so many different memories and emotions for me, many of which aren’t positive. When… Continue reading

4. The curriculum at Parsippany Christian School
Christian schools across the country are known for their conservative beliefs and values, but their pedagogical methods and curricula aren’t as widely known or as scrutinized as we might hope. In 2015, over 750,000 students were enrolled in conservative Christian schools in the US, many of which are taught using one of the three most… Continue reading

3. Becoming an Independent Baptist
There was a bit of controversy during the first half of my kindergarten year at Emmanuel Christian School. I don’t recall very clearly, but I seem to remember a teacher showing an episode of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles during school (or perhaps it was after hours for the kids who were still waiting for their… Continue reading

2. Being Shamed at Bible Storytime
I was around 5 years old when my family moved from that Filipino SBC church to the fundamentalist church (just as an aside, I do believe that Evangelicalism at large is, by definition, fundamentalist; however, I’ll use the term “fundamentalist” or “fundamentalism” to describe a particular subset of the Evangelical world, one that embraces the… Continue reading
